 Shawl Care and Storage
BASIC SHAWL CARE
Pressing to release wrinkles ~
ALWAYS use a pressing cloth on top of the fabric.
NEVER place a pressing iron directly on the fabric or let it rest on any embellishment such as embroidry, beading, or sequins. For embellished shawls and wraps, it is best to never pass an iron over the adornment elements either with or without a pressing cloth on top.
Never pump steam through the shawl with a consumer pressing iron. Leave any necessary steaming in the hands of a high quality dry cleaner.
Removing Lint and Surface Dust ~
Gently touch or lightly sweep with office tape such as ¾” Scotch Magic Tape. DO NOT USE the roller type of de-lint devices that have heavy adhesive rollers. The latter will pull delicate fibers, embroidery, and embellishment loose.
Avoid water spotting ~
It is best not to wear your shawl in rainy conditions if at all possible. If the weather looks like it may rain, a nice solution would be to wrap your shawl in a length of unbleached muslin or neutral color scarf for carrying within a purse or bag and change once you are indoors at the event site. Then, you can simply check your carrying bag.
If your shawl does show spotting from water or other liquid, take it to a high quality dry cleaner.
Cleaning ~
DRY CLEAN ONLY. Do not allow your cleaner to use wet cleaning methods as this will certainly ruin your shawl.
Always take your shawl to a high quality dry cleaner, never to a quick turnaround or Martinizing type of service.
We recommend using a cleaner that is schooled and certified by the New York School of Dry Cleaning, the best industry training institute in the U.S. If there is no such dry cleaner in your area, look for a service that specializes in care for wedding gowns or one that is adept in garment restoration.
Ask your qualified dry cleaner to test beads or other embroidery elements for appropriate treatment prior to cleaning.
Shawl Storage
Store folded Flat in a canvas sweater bag or wrapped in a length of unbleached muslin. It is recommended to place acid free white tissue amongst the folds so that beading and embroidery do not imprint onto the fabric surface. Enclose a cedar bag or chip in the storage bag or muslin wrap.
Do not drape your shawl on a clothes hanger for storage. To protect the beading and embroidery, store Flat Folded only.
Store in a dry, never a damp environment.
To protect the fabric dye color, NEVER store enclosed in plastic wrapping or plastic boxes. This is especially important in rooms with very hot environments or where high heat situations may be encountered during travel.
