Formal Evening Shawl – Indian Wedding Shawl - Garnet Red with Gold over Pure Silver Embroidery - SOLD

Designed for opulent celebrations, this exquisite formal Evening Shawl is fashioned with a background of deep Garnet Red adorned with Golden Tilla embroidery, a style of adornment used for the finest of court shawls in Kashmir. Luxurious and elegant, this exclusive evening wrap was originally created as a Bridal Shawl or Wedding Shawl to be worn during the joyous and lively marriage ceremonies of classical India where Red is the traditional colour worn by the Bride. However, it may be enjoyed for any important dress occasion or soirée.
Tilla is a rare type of needlework practiced today by only a handful of highly dedicated artisans. This graceful shawl features Real Golden Zari, an embroidery thread produced of Pure Silver plated with 17-18K Gold, coiled into design motifs on the front surface and meticulously anchored by hand with small stitches from underneath. This is an intense and demanding skill, but also a labor of love still carried on by the patient, superb artists of Kashmir who teach their expertise from generation to generation.

During certain periods of Kashmiri history when there were rulers who were also great patrons of the arts, the golden shade of Tilla embroidery was created of pure Gold wrapped around Silk thread. Due to obvious cost constraints this is hardly found in contemporary times, but this lovely evening shawl is quite distinctive and highly valued because of its hand embellishment with a mixture of two very precious metals. Hamsa Shawls is privileged to bring this wonderful hand crafted shawl to our collectors and hope that doing so will help support and promote the extraordinary work of the Himalayan textile artists.
